I pre-ordered the Apple iPad Case when I pre-ordered my iPad and it arrived a couple days after the iPad. When I first opened the box and removed the case my re-action was “What the $%^@ is this?”. The case has grown on me since then but I do still question the $40 price tag.
The case appears to be made with the rubber from spare tires. There’s a thin plastic appearing slip all around the case that looks like the result of bad injection molding, but is probably on purpose and intended to provide some protection against bumps.
The case itself is extremely thin which makes it easy to carry around. The material is also hard and provides good protection. On the negative side there’s no way to lock the cover closed. If it’s in a bag with other items they can still work their way into the case and scratch the iPad.
When the case is used to put the iPad in viewing mode as shown on the right it’s pretty unbalanced. The slightest breeze or bump will tip it over. This became more problematic over time as the hinged flaps lost some of their stiffness. I’ve pretty much given up on using the case this way. I’m just not carefully enough to make sure it’s not near an edge or within range of sharp objects or liquids when it tips over.
I did grow to like using the iPad case in it’s slightly angled position. This was often just right for viewing web pages, books or videos and provided enough support for touch navigation. It also provided a good angle for typing on the keyboard.
I quickly got used to slipping the iPad in and out of the case although it was a hassle at first. And since the iPad can’t be docked while in the case I needed to remove it nightly.
The case is durable against cuts and nicks, but and white dirt, dust or grime stand outs like a neon light on the pitch black material.
The bottom line is the case is a bit overpriced but appears durable and able to protect the iPad. It’s ideal for slipping into the external pocket of my laptop case. It’s the thinnest case I’ve seen that provides a solid cover to protect the iPad.
